A Delicious Taste of History

Here at Earl of Spencer - Bar & Restaurant in Albany, Western Australia, we provide a warm atmosphere with open fires all winter. In the summertime, you can bring your family and friends to relax in the large beer garden. For kids, we have a playground for them to run around to burn off some excess energy. Parents can watch them closely while they are enjoying a beverage in the beer garden.

We have a wide range of boutique beers on tap, plus a couple of imported English ales. The wines we offer are only from the Great Southern region because we believe in showcasing what this area has to offer. In addition, we have live music every Saturday evening, starting at 7:00 PM, and every Sunday, starting at 5:00 PM.

We also do functions including birthdays, weddings, business functions or even just a family get-together. Please give us a call to make a booking. Our friendly and helpful staff will make it an unforgettable event.

About Our Establishment

From starting out as a simple boarding house “with two sitting rooms and four bedrooms” from the 1850s to the 1880s, our establishment was then granted a beer and wine licence in 1884 while under the ownership of Richard Hawkins Nesbitt. Our place was first known as the Spencer Inn, and later, the Earl of Spencer Inn.

Richard’s son, Thomas Henry Nesbitt (who later became Mayor of Albany), took over in 1899. In 1920, Albany residents voted to reduce the number of licensed premises, which caused our inn to lose its licence a year later. The Nesbitt family converted the building into a grocery store.

It fell into disrepair until 1987 when it was renovated and restored, reopening as the Earl of Spencer Historic Inn in 1988.

Recognition and awards followed, as did fine food, ales, ciders and live music in a tradition of hospitality dating back to

Albany’s early days.
